1970s Gaggia Orione

Spring-Lever · Single Group · Full Restoration

The showpiece. An early-1970s Gaggia Orione spring-lever machine that came out of Chanhassen in rough, unsafe condition — and is the deepest restoration to pass across this bench.

The job was a complete strip-down: asbestos insulation removed and disposed of properly, every gasket and seal replaced, boiler ports assessed and made sound, a new pressurestat and certified safety valve fitted, and the entire machine rewired from scratch to modern 240V standards. What you see here is real brass and copper, cleaned and reassembled — not plated or painted over.

Fifty-year-old lever machines are exactly the work most shops turn away. If you have one sitting in a basement or a back room anywhere in the Twin Cities, it is very likely saveable.

Quick Mill Anita Evo

Single Group · E61 · Water Intrusion & Electrical Fault

This one came in for a routine tune-up: a drip at one fitting, and a slow weep into the drip tray the owner wasn’t sure was normal. It wasn’t.

On an extended idle heat-up, with no shots pulled, the expansion valve was dripping far faster than its normal bleed and the boiler safety valve was venting steam on a plain heat cycle. Tracing the leak path back, water had been migrating inside the machine onto the electrical section at the top of the boiler. The solid-state relay and a terminal block with zero ingress protection both tested with failing insulation resistance to chassis ground — a fault that had been building long before the machine reached the shop.

The relay and terminal block were replaced, cracked crimps in the harness re-terminated, the group gasket and screen renewed, and the valve and pressure side serviced once the machine could be safely re-energized. “A drip” was the symptom. The real job was finding out where the water was going.

Gaggia La Nera, 2-Group

Collected from a restaurant on Eat Street (Nicollet Avenue) in Minneapolis. Full teardown and decontamination done, and this is it back on its feet — copper boiler, a heat exchanger circuit per group, and the brass fittings all went back together after everything got serviced properly.

The data plate tells the real story: it reads Visacrem La Nera, 2GR, 230V, 2800W. Visacrem is one of the Barcelona brands, which means this machine and the BUNN below are effectively cousins from the same Spanish factory — and parts for both come from the same channel. Knowing that is the difference between “obsolete” and a routine repair.

It also uses the industry-standard 58mm E61-family group, so portafilters, baskets, gaskets and screens are common parts rather than proprietary ones. This one needed a full teardown, decontamination, and descale before any bench work could start.

Rocket Appartamento

A customer’s Rocket Appartamento came in with a maddening intermittent fault: the machine would cut off completely — heat, steam, everything — then reset itself minutes later with no pattern to it.

Bench testing traced it to the boiler head, where both the safety thermostat and the pressure switch had failed internally — each one drifting between near-zero and open-circuit resistance even fully disconnected from the machine. Heat damage and browning were visible on the connector housings, with embrittled crimp terminals that need re-terminating alongside the two switches. The heating element itself tested nominal and was ruled out.

Genuine Rocket parts are not stocked by the big US parts houses — they route Rocket owners straight back to authorized dealers. Sourcing correct OEM parts for dealer-locked and orphaned machines is routine work here, not a reason to write a machine off.

Minneapolis

Breville Oracle Touch

Super-Automatic · Integrated Grinder · Boiler Sensor Fault

A customer in Minneapolis ran a guided descale on her Oracle Touch and the machine came back wrong: it wouldn’t heat past 165°F afterward. The obvious guess was scale lodged somewhere in the water path.

The machine’s own service menu said otherwise. The brew boiler was healthy at 201°F, but the steam boiler wasn’t just capped low — it read OFF entirely, meaning the board wasn’t commissioning that element at all. The cause was smaller than it looked: light oxidation on the tip of the steam boiler’s low-level probe was enough to fool the fill-confirmation logic into holding the whole side back.

Cleaned the probe contact, reseated it, and the steam boiler came alive and climbed to 267°F. A worn O-ring at the probe port went in with it during reassembly, so the same fault shouldn’t find its way back through that seal.

St. Paul

BUNN Espress ES-1A

Picked up in St. Paul. It wears a BUNN badge, but underneath it is Spanish: the ES-1A was built by Gaggia of Spain and is essentially a rebadged Futurmat Milady. Futurmat and Visacrem are both Barcelona brands under the same parent, which is why this machine and the La Nera above share a parts channel.

That matters, because looking up “BUNN ES-1A” parts turns up very little — while the same components are catalogued and available under the Futurmat name. It is the difference between telling a customer their machine is dead and simply fixing it.

This one arrived with a hot-water faucet that would not shut off. Bench testing confirmed the boiler heated correctly and the steam side was fine; the actual fault was a broken retaining spring inside the hot-water valve, plus a tired stem O-ring and seat gasket. Orphaned and rebadged commercial machines are a specialty here.

Columbia Heights

Unic Rumba

A café in Columbia Heights had good reason to stop trusting its own hot water tap. Someone had already swapped the machine’s narrow OEM chrome outlet tube for a wider plastic line — and boiler-temperature water was flashing straight to steam the instant it hit open air.

The wider tube had erased the flow resistance the factory line was built to provide. The fix wasn’t a part — it was finding the machine’s own flow-adjustment screw on the hot water solenoid body and dialing it back until the mix ran hot instead of violent.

One screw, no parts ordered, water dispensing properly again inside the hour. The café is now a standing account, with maintenance visits on the calendar going forward.

Richfield

Fetco CBS-1131-XV+ Brewer

Commercial Batch Brewer · Error 050 · Temperature Probe

A coworking space in Richfield runs its whole coffee program off this Fetco, and one morning it started throwing error 050 — clearing once after a power cycle, then coming right back.

Error 050 is a short in the tank’s temperature probe, and that clear-then-return pattern is exactly what an intermittent short looks like: the fault shows live, but only re-latches on a cold boot. The fix was the OEM 8″ probe, confirmed against Fetco’s own service manual for this exact model — not the short water-level probe mounted right beside it, which is the one that tends to get pulled by mistake.

Batch brewers pour half of what an office or café serves in a day. They get the same diagnostic care here as the espresso machines.

Ramsey County

Mazzer Super Jolly Timer

64mm Commercial Grinder · Burr Service

From Ramsey County. The Super Jolly has sat next to more espresso machines than almost any other grinder — 64mm flat burrs, a heavy cast body, and a doser built to survive a commercial bar.

This photo is the part most people never see: the adjustment collar off and the burr chamber open. That collar is reverse-threaded and hides a stop screw, which is why grinders get returned “stuck” by people who forced it.

Grinders are the ignored half of the setup. When a café says the espresso “tastes flat” or “won’t dial in,” the machine usually gets blamed while the real culprit is a set of burrs well past their service life. Burr inspection, replacement, cleaning and recalibration are part of every visit here — not an afterthought.

Woodbury

Group Head Gaskets & a Descale Cadence

Not every job on this bench is a single dramatic fix. This shop’s two-group machine in Woodbury needed what most commercial machines eventually need: worn group head gaskets replaced, and an actual descale schedule instead of the “whenever someone remembers” version most cafés run on.

Gaskets ordered and installed, descale brought current across two full cycles. Because a scale-caked group head is what quietly turns a gasket job into a group head rebuild, a lighter, more frequent descale cadence was set going forward to keep it that way.

This is most of what actually keeps a café running — not a rescue call, just staying ahead of wear before it becomes a bigger bill.
